Technology is always changing, and often very quickly. New high-tech innovations have brought advancements to the workplace such as virtualization, cloud-based applications, and mobile development. Everywhere we look there are new applications or Internet-based products that require troubleshooting and maintenance.

IT employees are in high demand and have more pressure than ever to keep up with their fast-moving industry. Creative web management, business intelligence and reporting, quality assurance tes

ting...... the list goes on and on. IT work is never-ending. This brings about many challenges faced by IT employees.

Increased concerns over data and network security have business owners on high alert. As major companies have been victims of being hacked, we see that even the most elaborate security infrastructures can be penetrated. The role of the IT department is to minimize these risks, not an easy task for many reasons. As many companies now allow BYOD, bring your own device, this can create issues. The help desk may have more trouble tickets dealing with devices that are not compatible with the company’s network. This also allows a greater risk for data to be compromised.

Another area that can cause security vulnerabilities is “Shadow IT,” - hardware or software that’s not acquired or supported by the IT department. These can be as simple as devices and applications that end-users find on their own. Many times IT staff doesn’t have knowledge of the Shadow IT until a major issue occurs, putting them in the position of trying to play catch-up and regain control of the organization’s assets. An example is when unsecured public clouds are being used. IT asset management is all about knowing what IT assets exist, who they’re assigned to, and what they’re used for, and Shadow IT makes it a more difficult task.

Burnout is another big concern in the IT department due to ever increasing workloads and budget constraints. Compared to other departments, help desk employees put in longer hours than their colleagues. Full-time IT workers put in an average of 52 hours per week according to one survey. It’s no secret that over-worked employees are more stressed out and have more job dissatisfaction, which leads to higher turnover. These are just a few of the difficulties IT employees face.

Today’s companies are trending toward utilizing IT staffing services

According to a study by Fieldglass and Ardent Partners, almost 35 percent of today’s workforce is made up of contractors, freelancers, and temporaries. Some of this may be attributed to the ease of employers connecting with contract workers via online hiring platforms. These include labor marketplaces, job boards, and social media, all which allow employers the ability to search for candidates with very little effort or expense. Additionally, it makes is easier to be very specific when looking for certain qualifications and skillsets to match to particular projects.

IT staffing solutions can provide a company with highly trained contract employees that have the skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market. The Fieldglass study shows that employers appreciate the capability to manage projects through staffing websites and the security of being able to safely send payments through them. Staffing services are not only ideal for short term assignments, but can also help with permanent staffing solutions.
