The introduction of stemless wine glasses to the wine market was initially met with a lot of reluctance by wine enthusiast. Stemless wine glasses were seen as being very informal and defying the age-old tradition of proper wine etiquette. The stem of the wine glass, noticeably absent in this new variety, was deemed important not only for aesthetic reasons, but because it allows for holding the wine glass without projecting body warmth to the wine. However, today personalized stemless wine glasses have become almost mandatory in weddings, graduations and celebration parties because of their

elegance and uniqueness. They have rightly so gained acceptance as wine glasses. Stemless wine glasses come with additional benefits such as the fact that they are dishwasher friendly, can be stored easily and they are durable. That they do not have a stem makes them sturdy as stems are very easy to break. Stemless wine glasses are casual and hip. They have been credited for taking away the anxiety associated with holding traditional wine glasses, as they are easy to hold and thus perfect for casual occasions and festivities.

Stemless wine glasses are also in style because they can be customised adding an admirable touch to any celebration. Although it was considered rare to embellish wine glasses, decorating wine glasses dates as far back as the 18th century. Glassmakers would decorate glasses in a manner called the air twist or the opaque twist. The air twist involved making patterns on the stem of the glass using air bubbles, while opaque twist involved the use of coloured threads.

Personalized stemless wine glasses come in a variety of shapes and materials, ranging from large to small bowl shapes with larger wine bowls intended for red wines. It is imperative to note that lead crystal glasses, which are more preferred, will cost you more than non-lead crystal glasses. The advantage of wine glasses made from lead is that they are effective at letting wine breathe when swirled in the glass.

Currently, you can have names, initials and even symbols etched out on stemless glasses in an excellent array of designs and colours to match the theme of any occasion. In rare instances, hosts have etched the names of their guests and even of the wine varieties on the glass. This makes it easier for guests to know which glass is theirs in the sitting arrangement and which glass contains which type of wine. Needless to say, personalized stemless wine glasses can be used for all types of wines. They can also be used for water and non-alcoholic drinks like soft drinks and juice. Personalized stemless wine glasses also serve as a perfect take home gift for your guests.

In conclusion, as much as stemless wine glasses have been faulted for making it difficult to swirl the wine and aerate it during wine tasting, it is essential to note that they have been in use for centuries in Europe and the world over. There are numerous manufacturers of personalized stemless wine glasses now, with some of the big names in the industry including Riedel, Schott Zweisel and Giovino.
