Math has been called the language of science. It is essential to all disciplines of science and a sound base in this subject is essential for any prospective physicist, biologist, chemist etc. It is for this reason that there is no way around this subject for science students. Because it is a subject that requires a great deal of mental discipline, most students hate it because they cannot muster up the concentration to grasp its concepts. Many students attempt to memorize heft solution manuals to pass their exams instead of actually attempting to solve math problems. This helps them
through initial classes but as they enter their higher studies, they realize that this approach becomes futile and that the only way to ace the math test is to actually understand and solve math problems on their own.

There are some procedures that math students can follow to ease them in their quest of mastering this vast subject, or more appropriately, a part of this vast subject. First of all, the students need to be willing to learn, they should forget their hesitations and doubts about being mentally incapable of solving tough math problems, and just focus on what they are being taught.

Each human mind has the same amount of grey matter as anyone else’s – the difference in intelligence comes from how much each human is utilizing it. Many people believe that intelligence is a fixed quantity that cannot change for a person – but this is not true, the phrase “practice makes perfect” is way more plausible than what we give it credit for. The student just needs to practice the concepts that he is taught by attempting as many problems as possible, and he will soon realize that the more he solves, the easier they get – this is because his mind is being honed with every math problem he solves.

Learning is a process that never truly ends for any person; learning how to be a good math teacher follows suit. A math teacher who wants to impart knowledge and understanding to his students needs to teach as fast as the slowest pupil in his class. He should never assume that the students are aware of a basic concept; instead, he should be ready to cater to any of their queries, no matter how obvious or trivial they seem to him. This is because students do not have the years of experience let alone the educational qualification to match the teacher’s level of thinking. The teacher should remember that he, too, had once been a student, and scratched his head at what his teacher had said. The teacher should maintain an open and frank environment in the classroom and always try to elucidate mathematical laws and theorems with real world examples, particularly when teaching abstract branches of the subject.

Learning mathematics is impossible without a concerted effort on part of both the teacher and the student, but once this combination is formed, it can be a truly invigorating experience for both.
